Michael L. Fischer earned a B.A. degree from Santa Clara University in political science in 1964, and an M.A. degree in city planning from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967. He has held leadership positions in the California Coastal Commission (1972-1985), the Sierra Club (1987-1993), the California Coastal Conservancy (1994-1997), and the William and Flora Hewlitt Foundation (1997-2003).
